Currants and gooseberries are wonderful small fruits that were well-known in this country earlier in the century and are now making a comeback. Fruits can be eaten fresh or made into flavorful jams and jellies.
Currants make a refreshing juice and black currants, in particular, have almost 3.5 times the amount of Vitamin C as fresh oranges, on a gram to gram basis.
These are ideal fruits for those sections of the country with long, cold winters. They are also one of the few fruits that can be grown in lite shade and still bear a good crop. Today’s currant varieties have been bred for disease resistance, and the varieties we sell are either highly resistant or immune to White Pine Blister Rust disease.
Some states have restrictions on growing ribes (currants and gooseberries). Prior to ordering, please contact your Local Extension Office or Department of Agriculture to determine if there are restrictions in your state.
