Considered one of the more winter hardy and productive thornless varieties available, Chester blackberry produces large, high-quality fruit that ripens in early to mid-August. Fruit has good flavor when fully ripe, and does not soften or lose its shiny black color in hot weather. Chester plants are vigorous and show resistance to cane blight.

Reviews

Have had these for probably 6 years and have had some success. They do grow well and are productive but even after heavy pruning are not reliably good and size per plant varies. Am going to reduce number of plants and probably only keep 1/2 row. Flavor has never been consistently good.
Other variety in blackberry garden is doing very well consistently for about 8 years. Will try another variety. Not particularly happy with Chester.

Plug plant came in great shape. Planted in June last year. Grew well for their first year. This year they have taken off good and with the RCA trellis system are producing good primo canes and a lot of floracanes with good amount of berries for the second year. Berries started ripening in the second week of August. I’m thinking another 10 days to two weeks we’ll have our you pick customers out picking. We are zone 5.
They are a really nice flavorful berry.

After I planted these berries I became very ill. The garden was not cared for at all that summer but the plants I bought from Nourse farms survived and actually produced a few berries. I r3commend Nourse farms, they sell excellent plants!

I purchased 500 of these to start a business after I retired. They came packaged wonderfully. We had a very cold spring and a week after they were planted we got hit with a LOT of rain. The poor plants were swimming. once everything finally drained though, they all came through. I only lost 2. The ones that did the most swimming were a little slow coming on but they did finally come on. The next year they even were able to produce even though they didn't have a lot of growth from the first year. I would definitely recommend Nourse Farm plants.

These thornless blackberries grow VERY quickly & will take over if not kept in check.
They produced fruit 1 year after planting.
After 2 years, the 16 plants produced 1 cup of ripe blackberries per day. They are disease resistant & we had no problems with insects.
